MAC is the makeup line of the glamorous. Since its founding in the mid-80's, it's been the go-to cosmetics line for professionals & color-loving amateurs alike. But what keeps people coming back?? For 1 thing, the products are iconic: pulling out a tube of MAC lipglass simply feels glamorous. Secondly, the products are high quality: there’s nothing like an eyeshadow you can trust to give you the perfect smokey eye or mascara to give you lovely and long lashes.
But my favorite thing about MAC has to be the amazing collaborations in which the brand participates. Working with everyone from top designers to your favorite fictional characters, MAC seems to know what we all want & can be counted on to deliver it. Below are 9 of my very favorite MAC joint efforts!!
1. Hello Kitty for MAC Cosmetics
Hello Kitty sure is one busy cat. In 2008, she opened a Times Square boutique, went super high-end with Kimora Lee Simmons, became a model in Japanese Vogue & opened up to menswear. And in February 2009, everyone's favorite mouthless kitty-girl was saying, 'Howdy!' to MAC Cosmetics. The joining of the 2 brands was 'a no-brainer,' according to James Gager, senior VP and creative director for MAC.
2. Cyndi Lauper and Lady Gaga for MAC Cosmetics
Cyndi Lauper and Lady Gaga were tapped as the faces for MAC Cosmetics' February 2010 Viva Glam campaign to benefit the MAC AIDS Fund. Following in the footsteps of Eve, Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Missy Elliot, Fergie & many more, at a press event MAC Cosmetics revealed that Lauper and Lady Gaga were the inspiration for Viva Glam Cyndi Lipstick and Viva Glam Gaga Lipstick. 100% of proceeds were slated for the MAC AIDS Fund. The advertising campaign, called 'From Our Lips,' was begun in Feb.
3. Liberty of London for MAC Cosmetics
Liberty of London, launched in 2005, is a luxury accessories brand that exists as part of the extensive Liberty and Co. line. In March 2010, they teamed up with MAC to produce a limited-edition makeup line that featured saturated hues and pretty packaging. There were soft, luminescent highlighters in mod white compacts, plenty of creamy lipsticks & eyeshadows & a dark green/blue pearlized nail polish, all with adorable illustrations of flowers on the packaging. There was even a specially-designed Liberty of London scarf.
4. alice + olivia for MAC Cosmetics
In July 2010, Alice + Olivia's Stacey Bendet & M.A.C. Cosmetics wanted to color everyone bad. The pint-sized designer teamed up with the mega makeup brand to launch a cosmetics collection filled with bold pigments, lipglosses & nail lacquers that embodied the spirit of the quintessential Alice + Olivia girl. Involved in the creative process from the start, the dynamic duo created a 9-piece line that hit counters in pretty-yet-edgy shades of turquoise, purple, yellow & pink boasting names like Morning After, So Rich So Pretty, I Want Candy & If It Sparkles. So cool!!
5. Venomous Villains for MAC Cosmetics
Every girls talks about her ♥ of Disney Princesses, but the villains are the ones who hold the true intrigue. MAC seemed to understand this completely with their fun collaboration. Featuring Dr. Facilier, Maleficent, Cruella de Vil & the Evil Queen from Snow White, this collaboration was deliciously evil & the shadowy colors reflected a bad-girl vibe.
6. Marcel Wanders for MAC Cosmetics
Sometimes a meeting is just meant to be. Dutch industrial designer Marcel Wanders let it be known that he was interested in working with a cosmetics company at the same time that MAC Cosmetics' creative director James Gager was looking for a designer to collaborate with. The MAC executive was a longtime Wanders fan. The resulting collaboration, MAC & Marcel Wanders, in December '10, was an amazing capsule collection of MAC luxe cosmetics packaged in highly stylized tubes, compacts & clutches designed by Wanders.
7. Mickey Contractor for MAC Cosmetics
If you've an olive-based skin tone, you must have flipped for MAC Cosmetic's January 2011 color launch. Designed by Mickey Contractor (the artist behind 3 decades worth of glamorous Bollywood movie stars) the color story debuted yellow-based foundations & concealers finely tuned to match the Indian skin tones that Contractor is so familiar with sculpting. The collection also included a brilliant palette of bright fuchsias, teals, plums & neutrals to perfectly complement tan tones & launched them by way of lipsticks, lipglasses, eyeshadow pots & palettes, as well as the brand's popular fluidline gel eyeliners. My pick for star product was the double-ended Select Moisturecover corrector, which claimed to transform your favorite concealer or foundation into a tone custom-suited for yellow-based skins.
8. Wonder Woman for MAC Cosmetics
Wonder Woman swooped in to save you from plain Jane beauty fate. DC Comics' most iconic heroine of all time teamed up with MAC Cosmetics for a February 2011 makeup collection inspired by Wonder Woman's blue, red & gold bustier leotard, her cunning super power-meets-glamazon charms & a strong punch of what the beauty brand was calling her 'kick-sass' girl power. Must-haves like the berry-toned lipglasses, metallic shimmer pigment powders & mineralize skinfinish compacts all came in oversized packaging meant to mimic the larger-than-life heroine's taste for all things big. Metallic makeup pouches & clever 'tool belts' came equipped with limited-edition blue short-handled makeup brushes, because you'd need to powder your nose & touch up that sexy eyeliner smudge in between your bad guy slaying kicks & inter-galactic battles.
9. Lady Gaga for MAC Cosmetics
When you've got a winning formula, you want to stick with it. Such was the news coming from MAC Cosmetics in February 2011, as the beauty brand announced it had signed Lady Gaga for the 2nd year in a row as the face of its fundraising MAC Viva Glam franchise. Our favorite fame monster was lending her voice to spread awareness of HIV/AIDS with the launch of MAC Viva Glam Gaga 2 lipstick & lipglass. In the visuals shot by Nick Knight and styled by Nicola Formichetti, Gaga was dripping in diamonds & pearls, as well as, painted in a glammed-out smokey eye that contrasted nude lips & platinum blonde locks.
*BONUS: Iris Apfel for MAC Cosmetics*
This January, MAC launched a collaboration with the one-&-only Iris Apfel!! The line is surely eccentric & bold. I'm hoping for the perfect red lipstick!
So, let me know, what was your favorite MAC collaboration?? And what would your dream collaboration be?
